The trial has started for that man charged with murdering senior high school teacher and former beauty queen Tara Grinstead.
Jurors in the Irwin County Courthouse heard opening statements on Monday for that situation of Ryan Duke, now 36, who’s charged with brutally murdering Grinstead, 30. She disappeared in 2005, based on CBS affiliate WMAZ.
Prosecutors say Duke rose via a window at Grinstead’s Ocilla, Georgia home — about 100 miles south of Macon — and strangled her in their bed.
Grinstead’s disappearance went unsolved for a long time until Duke’s former roommate and alleged co-conspirator, Bo Dukes, implicated Duke in 2017. Dukes claimed the defendant known as him to assist get rid of Grinstead’s body before they “cremated” her on the pecan farm of Dukes’ uncle, based on Fox News.
Duke and Dukes were both apparently former students of Tara Grinstead, who had been an eleventh-grade history teacher at Irwin County Senior High School, as formerly reported.
Prosecutors say Ryan Duke confessed towards the murder and brought government bodies as to the remained from the victim’s remains.
“They find Tara Grinstead slowly by piece,” prosecutor J.D. Hart told jurors in her own opening statement. “Her backbone, her teeth, her fingers, her toes. That’s what’s left of Tara Grinstead after Bo Dukes and Ryan Duke ‘cremated’ her.”

“This situation is all about power and influence,” Merchant stated in her own opening arguments. “Ryan Duke has neither. Bo Dukes has both. The Condition has both.”
Merchant added that her client was “scared to dying of Bo Dukes,” alleging he confessed towards the murder to pay for for his friend’s evildoing, based on Fox News.
Bo Dukes was the topic of a 2019 manhunt after he was charged with kidnapping and raping two women at gunpoint on New Year’s Day while on bond within the Grinstead situation, based on WMAZ.
Bo Dukes was found guilty with a jury in March 2019 in order to get rid of Grinstead’s body, acknowledging he burned her until “it appeared as if it had been all ash,” as formerly reported. He was sentenced to twenty five years in jail.
He was indicted in October 2019 for raping another lady at knifepoint in The month of january 2017, based on Law & Crime. Both rape cases remain pending.
Among the first witnesses to accept stand against Ryan Duke was Perry Police Capt. Heath Dykes, who had been getting an extramarital affair with Grinstead during the time of her disappearance. Dykes sounded the alarm after Grinstead’s mother requested him to carry out a welfare check when she couldn’t get ahold of her daughter.
Dykes left greater than a dozen voicemails on Grinstead’s phone, some performed for jurors, based on WMAZ.
“Hey, Tara, please call me,” performed one message. “I’m type of worried in regards to you now. Please tell me you’re okay.”
Around the stand, Dykes claimed he never saw a white-colored latex glove on Grinstead’s front lawn as he went to evaluate her — which prosecutors honed in on because it contained the Ryan Duke’s DNA and palm print.
The defense, however, claims there is also DNA from a 3rd party located on the glove.
Grinstead’s father along with a lady she mentored in pageantry also required the stand, based on the CBS affiliate.
Grinstead disappeared after helping local contestants for that annual Yams beauty pageant go to a cookout, based on Fox News.

Duke is billed with malice murder, legal murder, burglary, concealing a dying and irritated assault, based on WMAZ. If charged, he faces existence imprisonment without the potential of parole.
