Shooting Dying Of Nj Lady Investigated As Anti-Trans Hate Crime

Following a shooting dying a week ago of a lady known as “a fierce LGBTQ advocate”, a Nj man continues to be arrested on murder charges. 

Daniel L. Cruz, 36, is facing one count of murder and many weapons charges after 23-year-old Shai Vanderpump, who had been trans lady, was discovered shot to dying on Friday in a home on Kelsey Avenue in Trenton, based on local police. After officials in the county’s homicide unit taken care of immediately the house determined Vanderpump, she was transported to Capital Health Regional Clinic, where she was pronounced dead. 

Garden Condition Equality, a Nj advocacy and education organization for LGBTQ individuals, tweeted about Vanderpump’s killing over the past weekend.

“We are devastated to understand that Shai Vanderpump, who many know in Trenton like a fierce LGBTQ advocate, was tragically murdered today around 4:30 am,” the audience authored.

Government bodies identified the victim with a different name when announcing charges against Cruz, who they stated was recognized as a suspect through witness interviews and surveillance footage. He was arrested throughout a traffic stop on Saturday, the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office stated. it’s unclear if he’s been arraigned yet or retained an attorney who are able to speak on his account.

“Detectives still investigate what motivated the attack,” an announcement from prosecutors states. “The situation remains under analysis for potential bias charges as [Vanderpump] is transgender and recognized as female.”

A GoFundMe page continues to be setup by Hollie Flowers to boost funeral funds. The page shows that Vanderpump was wiped out while protecting a family member.

“Unfortunately Shai’s dying has shocked all of us, We like our beloved Shai and we’re requesting any donations to assist using the funeral expenses to assist bury our beloved Relative Shai Vanderpump!” the page’s description reads.

Vanderpump’s dying is among a minimum of 32 slayings of transgender Americas to date this season, based on data published by Human Legal rights Campaign. Since The month of january, the Biden Administration has taken steps towards transgender equality, including addressing passport gender markers, applying the final Court’s Bostock decision across several agencies, and ending the trans military service ban.
