Plummeting Lake Mead Water Levels Reveal Unknown Body In Barrel

Continuously falling water levels in Lake Mead made it feasible for boaters in the future upon a failing barrel that contains human remains.

Passersby made the grisly discovery close to the Hemenway Harbor boat ramp Sunday mid-day, finding what made an appearance to become a 50-gallon drum, based on CBS Vegas affiliate KLAS-TV. The barrel am corroded that witnesses often see with the walls from the drum, which held skeletal human remains.

A serious drought is responsible for a truly alarming reduction in the lake’s water levels through the years.

“We heard a lady scream in the side from the beach, after which my hubby went to clearly see that which was wrong,” stated Shawna Hollister, who had been in this area. “And he then recognized there is an appearance within the barrel.”

On Tuesday, Vegas Metro Police homicide Lt. Ray Spencer spoken with, revealing the unknown murder victim would be a male who died from the gunshot wound.

Spencer stated the John Doe’s clothing recommended he was wiped out and dropped in to the lake in 4 decades ago or early 1980s.

“Right now, we’re searching at cases dating back the ’70s and also the ’80s, searching through missing persons reports to find out if we’re able to potentially make an identification,” Spencer stated. “We can’t really begin the analysis until we all know who he’s.”

Spencer hopes products based in the barrel can help government bodies for the reason that effort.

“Really, we’re at where you started, looking to get him identified,” Spencer added.

Based on KLAS, the place could have been a large number of ft underwater during the 1980s. Through the years, workers have experienced to increase the marina ramp countless ft to achieve water as levels still decrease.

The River Mead reservoir is around the Colorado River and created through the Hoover Dam it is the U . s . States’ largest reservoir by capacity. Offering water to multiple states, it has been the topic of a water shortage crisis considering severe global warming, CNN reported in 2021. The drought has elevated the interest in water as levels fell to 143 ft below “full” this past year, an archive low because it was built-in the 1930s. Since its construction, it’s lost 5.5 trillion gallons water.

Evaporation and siphoning for human use also take into account shedding levels. CNN reported that 90% of Las Vegas’s water originates from Lake Mead.

“The water is climbing down in a dramatic rate,” Spencer told “As the river water drops, there’s always the chance that we’re likely to find out more human remains.”

“It’s really frightening that something of that nature continues to be here with this period of time,” a witness told KSNV. “Maybe the household of the missing person might have some peace.”
