Man Billed In 2004 Cold Situation Murder Of School Student Who Had Been Studying Criminal Analysis

Nearly 2 decades following a Louisiana college student’s body was discovered within an abandoned building in Texas, investigators have arrested the person they feel wiped out her.

David Anthony Burns, 43, of Boyce, was arrested Tuesday mid-day and billed him using the second-degree murder of Courtney Coco, 19, the Alexandria Police Department authored in an announcement. Burns was taken into child custody carrying out a grand jury indictment.

Coco was last seen by her mother at her West Sandy Bayou home in October 2004. Her body is discovered 2 days later within an abandoned building in Winnie, Texas, local outlet KALB reports. While a clinical examiner couldn’t determine the Coco’s exact reason for dying, they did conclude that they was murdered. 

A motive within the situation has not been disclosed.

Alexandria Police Det. Tanner Dryden required within the cold situation in 2018. He earned Tuesday’s arrest, police noted. 

Coco’s dying was profiled within the investigative podcast “Real Existence Real Crime” for a 2019 episode titled “Who Murdered Courtney Coco.” In that episode, the Coco’s family met up with upon the market detective Woodsy Overton because they dove in to the situation. The podcast led to a renewed public curiosity about the situation.

The household thanked the podcast inside a Wednesday statement. 

“Our family want to thank Woodsy Overton with Real Existence Real Crime for investigating Courtney’s situation if this was listed like a Cold Situation and never being labored,” the statement read. “He then solved her murder in just 7 short days &amp switched over his findings to APD.”

When requested concerning the podcast’s impact on the break, Rapides Parish Da Phillip Terrell told KALB that he wasn’t able to talk concerning the specifics. 

“I shouldn’t do anything whatsoever to compromise the integrity from the situation,” he stated. “We anxiously waited such a long time and labored so challenging it up to now. It had been a really old situation, evidence was old. It’s a difficult situation. Coco’s mother, Stephanie Belgard, told NBC’s “Dateline” this past year the slain teen was majoring in criminal analysis at Northwestern Condition College when she was wiped out.
