A federal jury in Dallas has awarded greater than $ten million towards the family a guy who had been fatally shot by two deputies in 2015 as they had his arms elevated.

Video demonstrated that Gilbert Flores, 41, had his arms up and held a knife as he was wiped out by the Bexar County sheriff’s deputies.

A great jury in 2015 declined to indict the deputies, Greg Vasquez and Robert Sanchez, on criminal charges. Flores’ family filed a civil suit and also the jury on Thursday found the 2 deputies violated Flores’ constitutional legal rights, the Dallas Express-News reported.

Based on testimony, Flores’ mother known as 911 to are convinced that her boy had assaulted his wife and infant child. Around the call, Flores could be heard saying he would die by “suicide by cop.”

A lawyer for Flores’ family, Robert Wilson, told jurors the deputies weren’t at risk once they opened up fire on Flores.

“You just don’t shoot somebody when they’re standing still and surrendering,” Wilson stated.

But attorneys representing the officials contended that Flores continued to be a danger while he declined to decrease the knife.

The deputies declined to comment following the jury’s decision.
