The court on Wednesday purchased Academy Award-winning film director Paul Haggis to stay under detention at his hotel in southern Italia while Italian prosecutors still investigate a woman’s allegations he had sex together with her over 2 days without her consent, Italian news reports stated.
After performing a hearing that lasted several hrs within the Brindisi courthouse, Judge Vilma Gilli issued the ruling that extends his detention in the farmhouse residence within the countryside of Ostuni, a tourist town where he was designed to take part in craft creativity festival now, Corriere della Sera daily reported.
Calls Wednesday evening to Gilli’s office went unanswered.
The Ansa and LaPresse news agencies stated Gilli had figured that as the 69-year-old Haggis, who resides in the U . s . States, is not a flight ticket risk, there is the “danger” evidence might be compromised or the alleged crime might be repeated.
Haggis’ lawyer, Michele Laforgia, stated following the hearing that his client, prior to the judge, had reiterated his total innocence and it is in “hopeful expectation” that he’ll be ultimately vindicated.
“Paul Haggis clarified all queries and described what went down,” Laforgia told reporters outdoors the courthouse. “He declared themself, because he had already done correctly following the detention, completely innocent, meaning the relations he’d with this particular lady were totally consensual.”
As the woman’s allegations are investigated, the 69-year-old Canadian-born director, producer and screenwriter was purchased on Sunday to remain arrested in the guest residence inside a farmhouse in Ostuni, a well known tourist town in Puglia, the location developing the “heel” from the Italian peninsula.
Prosecutors have stated he has to analysis for alleged irritated sexual violence and irritated injuries.
Prosecutors have described the lady as youthful and foreign. Condition TV along with other Italian media stated she’s a 30-year-old Englishwoman who’d known Haggis before he found Ostuni.
Requested with a reporter what sort of relationship Haggis and also the lady had, Laforgia responded that it absolutely was a “relationship of acquaintance.”
The attorney stated the defense disputes a medical facility report indicating the lady had endured physical injuries.
“There isn’t any manifestation of injuries nor manifestation of violence,″ Laforgia asserted, adding, “I think that they (the investigators) badly construed the findings from the emergency room” of the Brindisi hospital, in which the lady was taken after she told government bodies that they have been sexually mistreated.
Haggis co-authored, directed and created “Crash,” which won the 2006 Oscars for the best picture and finest screenplay. Also, he authored the screenplay for “Million Dollar Baby,” another Oscar champion.
He’s had legal issues recently stemming from sexual misconduct accusations by four women within the U . s . States.
The attorney also stated that Haggis had told the judge when his detention were revoked he intended in which to stay Italia in almost any situation so he could fully obvious his name.
Haggis “has every interest to become present” for courtroom proceedings and “to remain in Italia until his total innocence is for sure determined, because, naturally, his existence here as well as in the U . s . States where he resides depends upon that,” Laforgia stated.
Because Haggis doesn’t speak Italian, he posted written statements in British towards the court through the hearing. Translations back-and-forth lengthened the time period of the hearing, Laforgia stated.
