Carol Lapaglia made the worst telephone call of her existence on the Monday mid-day.
“I simply got home from work and my hubby, he’s on the floor,” Carol screamed for an Allegheny County, Pennsylvania 911 dispatcher on This summer 21, 2014. “He’s, he’s, he’s dead. There is a big puddle of bloodstream.”
Her boyfriend in excess of 2 decades, Jack Parkes, 59, lay dead on the ground from the family room within the Kennedy Township home, six days before their scheduled wedding.
By 3:00 p.m., the only method left to assist Parkes or Carol was to determine who’d wiped out him.
“When I showed up on scene, the very first factor I observed would be that the victim’s mind was covered in bloodstream,” Allegheny Police Det. Laurie McKeel told “An Unpredicted Killer,” airing Fridays at 8/7c on Archiweekend. “It had been on closer examination you can view it would be a gunshot wound.”
While there have been no indications of struggle within the room using the victim’s body, all of those other home would be a mess: There have been drawers brought out as well as their contents thrown about, the bed mattress was askew around the bed, and empty jewellery watching boxes were tossed in some places. And, most significantly, although the mystery and garage doors were apparently open — that was unusual for that couple — the leading door have been guaranteed with a normally-unused deadbolt when Carol showed up home. Police determined that Parkes had let his killer in to the home, indicating he likely understood coupled with reliable whoever had murdered him.
The very first person they spoke to was Carol, Parkes’ fiancée and girlfriend of twenty five years. Carol, who had been almost too upset to talk, told police that she’d left for work on 5:40 a.m. but had become a late morning telephone call from the realtor the pair have been dealing with to market Parkes’ late mother’s home. The realtor could not achieve Parkes, even though he was lately upon the market and spent most days throughout the house. Then, Carol could not achieve him either.
The greater time passed, the greater worried she grew to become — and, eventually she’d left work early to visit check up on him.
Carol told police that the majority of the couple’s jewellery, including Parkes’ costly watches, the couple’s rings for his or her impending nuptials, and Parkes’ gold coin collection had all been drawn in the robbery.
Her employer confirmed that she’d had the experience before departing soon after 2:00 p.m., and also the autopsy demonstrated that Parkes have been shot within the back right side of his mind having a .380 caliber hand gun between the mid-morning. Carol was eliminated like a suspect she then indicated towards the cops they ought to consider Parkes’ nephew Bradley Manley.
Manley resided next door in the couple and wasn’t keen on Carol. He’d reviewed to determine Parkes the morning of his dying knowing Carol would not be there to go over the couple’s need to sell Parkes’ mother’s house.
“In the words, ‘I didn’t want her to place her two cents in,’” McKeel told “An Unpredicted Killer.”
Manley, it switched out, thought Carol was too controlling and desired to discuss the household property Parkes-man-to-Parkes-man. Jack Parkes, however, wouldn’t make any decisions without Carol’s input. Manley, who’d showed up around 10:30 a.m., left empty-handed around 11:15 a.m.
He did possess a .380 caliber pistol — but police determined the ballistics did not match.
Next was another nephew that the pair have been close: Carol Lapaglia’s nephew Michael Lapaglia. During questioning, Michael — who was simply dishonorably discharged in the U.S. military for synthetic marijuana use — accepted he’d were built with a receding last year using the aunt and uncle who’d helped elevated him. But he and the girlfriend, Melanie, stated they’d spent your day together errands within the nearby capital of scotland- Sharpsburg.
His alibi, which incorporated charge card transactions in Sharpsburg as well as an appointment using the local Veterans Matters clinic to find strategy to his Post traumatic stress disorder, examined.
Police had just one other avenue of analysis to pursue: the missing jewellery and coins.
On August. 4, 2014, a Pittsburgh officer who focused on pawn shop records and it was enhancing the Allegheny police known as and said excitedly that she’d located the stolen jewellery in a shop within the city. That pawn shop had surveillance cameras plus they had video of the individual who attempted to market the jewellery: Michael Lapaglia.
Allegheny police include a request to acquire Michael’s phone records to ensure his alibi, then known as Michael and the girlfriend, Melanie, set for questioning. He denied everything, and she or he denied giving him an incorrect alibi. She even claimed the jewellery he was seen on video selling was hers, not Parkes’ and Carol Lapaglia’s.
When police got Michael’s records away from the telephone company, they verified a lot of his original alibi — with the exception that, around 11:45 a.m., his phone pinged in his aunt and uncle’s house.
Based on Carol, around 11:45 a.m. was when she first attempted to achieve Parkes and unsuccessful.
When faced using the mobile phone records, Michael confessed… kind of. First, based on court public records, he claimed to possess been browsing the vehicle while a medication dealer he known as “Stink” conned the house and shot Parkes. But, following a bathroom break, he told police something nearer to the reality.
“I was struggling with Post traumatic stress disorder and, the morning of This summer 21, I requested Mel to consider a trip beside me,” he told police inside a recorded confession. “She just drove lower with i and me parked her vehicle. I informed her to hold back. She never got from the vehicle, she’d not a clue where i was going.”
He claimed he’d been charged with stealing jewellery the entire year prior, so he desired to visit making amends.
“I knocked around the door to apologize and talk,” he stated. “In those days, he grew to become hostile and that he clogged me and thrown at me … He’d two hands throughout my neck. In those days, I felt my existence was threatened. And That I were built with a pistol, .380, on me, also it discontinued.Inches
He stated then he panicked, required the jewellery, and left.
Michael’s story wasn’t suitable for the health of Jack Parkes’ body, which demonstrated he’d been shot once within the right side by his ear coupled with no defensive wounds on his hands. And, since entire two-story house have been completely ransacked following the murder, police did not think he was panicking, either. Rather, they deemed he came particularly to take advantage of the pair.
Although it was Michael Lapaglia who’d attempted and unsuccessful to pawn his aunt and uncle’s jewellery in Sharpsburg soon after the murder, he eventually got $1,000 in the Pittsburgh pawn look for the jewellery, which he spent $600-700 on heroin.
Based on court public records, Michael have been suspected of stealing jewellery from Carol throughout a family Labor Day weekend party in 2013. His mother told Carol that he’d stolen jewellery from her, too. Neither women ever reported him towards the police, however it made him unwelcome in Carol’s home next.
In June 2014, Michael had began being employed as a teller in a local bank, based on court public records records, but have been fired around This summer 4, 2014 — two days prior to the murder — after greater than $2,700 was discovered missing from his cash drawer in under per month. He wasn’t prosecuted for the reason that affair, either.
On August. 5, 2014, Michael Lapaglia was billed with murder and robbery in Jack Parkes’ dying. He was charged on counts at trial in June 2015, based on Pittsburgh CBS affiliate KDKA, and it was sentenced to existence imprisonment without the potential of parole for that murder plus another 10-twenty years for that robbery on Sept. 9, 2015.
Carol Lapaglia gave a target impact statement at her nephew’s sentencing, based on KDKA.
“When I came home from work on that day and located Jack, Irrrve never imagined inside a million years it could have been my nephew, Michael, that required his existence,” she stated. “How could that very same kid that people loved a lot, make a move so terrible to his uncle? I have a problem with that question every single day.Inches
Michael Lapaglia is presently incarcerated at the State Correctional Institution at Mercer, around an hour north of Pittsburgh.
