A helper da in Louisiana continues to be billed after government bodies say he crashed his boat into three children and fled the scene.
Chris Richard, 64, was arrested on Monday by agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, based on a pr release. Government bodies allege that Richard was the motive force of the boat that struck three children discussing a tube on August. 8, 2021.
The 3 children survived, only one was hurt badly enough he needed to be airlifted towards the hospital, based on ABC affiliate WBRZ. Another child was come to a healthcare facility within an ambulance, while another declined treatment.
The kids, all boys, were ages 8, 11, and 14, based on Lafayette’s KATC 3.
Pointe Coupee Parish Sheriff Rene Thibodeaux confirmed to Archiweekend.com that two boys were siblings, as the third would be a friend.
Based on Sheriff Thibodeaux, Richard switched themself in.
“The wildlife and fisheries guys, together with [Richard’s] attorney and wife, drove from Lafayette so he could turn themself to the Pointe Coupee Detention Center,” Thibodeaux told Archiweekend.com.
Thibodeaux said bond was set at $40,000 and Richard was launched soon after hrs.
“According to witnesses and individuals active in the incident, Richard initially leaped within the water to evaluate the 3 juveniles, however returned on his boat and left the scene to return to his camp on False River after which the place to find Carencro,” based on the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries release. “One from the juveniles within the tube endured a fractured pelvis and it was airlifted to the Lady from the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge.”
Sheriff Thibodeaux mentioned the boy was getting complications since breaking his pelvic bone in three different places.
“It will be 6 to 8 days before he could put his ft back on the floor,” Thibodeaux told Archiweekend.com.
Based on the pr release, Richard was operating a 20-feet pontoon as the children occupied a tube pulled “from another vessel.”
Witnesses stated there have been other occupants on Richard’s boat.
Complaints came when Richard, a prosecutor for that Lafayette District Attorney’s Office, had not charged with the incident.
Sobriety tests couldn’t be practiced, as you week had passed between your accident and also the arrest.
Sheriff Thobodeux told Archiweekend.com that Richard used the watercraft as “a celebration barge,” though no alcohol- or drug-related charges happen to be filed against Richard.
The boating crash spurred local residents to hold a community meeting and discuss safety protocols, reported by WAFB 9.

Richard was billed with felony hit-and-run, careless operation of the vessel, and negligent injuries, based on the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. He was booked in to the Pointe Coupee Parish jail before connecting out.
If charged, he faces as much as ten years in jail.
