A transient woman accused inside a fatal knifing of the Asian lady in California on Saturday was jailed days previously assault charges but had been freed without bail due to COVID-19 limitations, government bodies stated.
Darlene Stephanie Montoya, 23, allegedly stabbed 64-year-old Ke Chieh Meng to dying as she walked her two dogs in Riverside, California on April 3.
Meng was discovered with several stab wounds in her own abdomen area within the city’s La Sierra neighborhood around 7:30 a.m. She was rushed to hospital where she later died.
Meng resided locally, based on police. After she didn’t go back home, her family canvassed the region and ultimately happened upon the crime scene once they saw law enforcement in the region.
“The family began heading out searching on her because she hadn’t came back back,” Officer Ryan J. Railsback told Archiweekend.com on Monday.
Montoya, who allegedly fled the region, was arrested nearby after neighbors reported her for acting suspiciously and loitering.
Police don’t suspect the deadly stabbing would be a hate crime which Montoya “randomly confronted” Meng while she was on her behalf walk.
“Our detectives, after interviewing the suspect on and on through all of the evidence, and everything, they’ve found absolutely nothing to claim that the victim was targeted strictly on her ethnicity,” Railsback stated.
Meng’s dying follows a rise in hate crimes targeting Asians within the wake from the coronavirus pandemic. Recently, a white-colored gunman massacred eight people, mainly of Asian descent, in a trio of massage parlors within the Atlanta area.
Officials, who didn’t specify a precise motive within the knife attack, stated Montoya is experiencing being homeless.
“We believe the suspect did what she did, and committed this murder, her mental health problems and her drug abuse issues most likely have something related to it,” Railsback stated.
Montoya was arrested on suspicion of murder, utilizing a weapon throughout the commission of the legal, and being intoxicated by an unlawful substance. She hasn’t been formally billed.
Montoya comes with an alleged good reputation for “violent” behavior, government bodies stated. On March 30, she was charged with attacking another individual together with her skateboard near a shopping mall, based on police force.
“We found her, we arrested her, we booked her into jail,” Railsback described.
That incident happened merely a couple of miles from where Meng was wiped out police confirmed the victim within the incident wasn’t Asian. Montoya was billed with assault having a deadly weapon, however, she was ultimately released having a citation because from the situation inside the jail.
“This is really a horrible tragedy which should haven’t happened,” Railsback added. “These current bail schedules — directed through the condition and hang by courts — due to the COVID pandemic, she was launched on the citation from jail. When we weren’t under these special rules for that bail schedule at this time there’s most likely a high probability the suspect would be in child custody…and wouldn’t have experienced the chance to commit violence against other people. Montoya was booked into Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on April 3, based on online jail records. She’s being held without bail.
