Heydar Aliyev International Airport Designed By Autoban

The interior architecture project of Heydar Aliyev International Airport, the busiest airport in the Caucasus, was made by Istanbul-based Autoban. The contemporary approach in the interior architecture of the airport aims to eliminate the taboo that the spaces created inside the airport are huge and public.

Autoban, which started the project with an up-to-date design goal that keeps up with the time, went beyond stereotypical airport spaces and aimed to design original spaces that serve thousands of different users. A more intimate and domestic atmosphere was wanted to be created inside the airport, which can be described as a cold, industrial and complex space.

One of the most original parts of Heydar Aliyev International Airport is the cocoon elements designed by Autoban used in the interior design of the airport. Wooden cocoon structures of different sizes, ranging in length from 6.2 to 10.5 meters, are designed to produce spaces closer to the human scale inside the airport. In this way, mechanics of different sizes and heights were produced within the large volume of the airport, preventing uniformity within the structure.

The choice of wood as a material also coincides with the innovative structure of cocoons. The production of cocoons using wood, which create a perception of space within space, also makes it easier to provide the desired warm atmosphere. At the same time, the wooden coverings, lighting system and stone floor coverings used in the interior design of the airport have also been selected to match the architectural texture of the cocoons.
